Many experts consider dental implants the ideal way to replace missing teeth because of their unique advantages. Unlike dentures and dental bridges, these replacements include a titanium rod that’s embedded in your jawbone for a more permanent and reliable restoration.

Plus, dental implants have an incredibly high success rate of more than 90%, but they’re not completely invincible. Fortunately, you can decrease the likelihood of experiencing failure by getting more Vitamin D. Continue reading to learn more about how this ingredient supports your new teeth!

What is Vitamin D?

Also referred to as calciferol, this is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus from the foods you eat. These ingredients are essential components for building strong teeth and bones. Without enough of it in your system, your skeleton can become brittle, misshapen, or prone to injury.

Vitamin D also supports other bodily functions. For instance, it supports your immune system to fight off infections and disease and contributes to healthy muscle regeneration.

How Does Vitamin D Affect Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the only restorations that include a support pole that’s surgically placed in your jaw. It can take three to six or more months to recover because your mouth must produce enough new bone growth to fuse with the material, making it a permanent part of your smile.

Unfortunately, without enough vitamin D, your body might not have the raw ingredients it needs to generate enough bone material to complete this osseointegration process successfully. Your new tooth might become destabilized in the foundation of your mouth, increasing the likelihood of experiencing implant failure.

Furthermore, vitamin D supports your immune system so your body can fight off bacteria in your mouth that could otherwise infect the surgical site. This prevents gum disease, like peri-implantitis, the leading cause of failure.

How Can I Get More Vitamin D?

Thankfully, increasing your vitamin D levels isn’t usually too difficult. You can ingest it in certain foods, like fatty fish and egg yolks, naturally. Other products, like dairy, fruit juices, or cereals, are sometimes fortified with it.

However, the simplest way to improve your vitamin D is by taking a 15 to 20-minute walk during peak hours on a bright, sunny day. Your skin produces this ingredient when it comes into contact with the sun’s ultraviolet rays to boost your levels.

Getting more vitamin D is an easy and effective way to maintain your new teeth and prevent potential failure!
