You’re struggling to keep your dentures in place while you eat and speak, and you’ve heard there’s a magical product that can help: denture adhesive. What they say is true; denture adhesive can keep your restoration from slipping and sliding all over the place. But you’re probably wondering how to actually use it!
Never fear – these five simple steps will walk you through the entire process.
Step 1: Determine Whether You Need It
Many denture adhesive products contain zinc and can cause an “overdose” if you use them too frequently. Plus, if you find yourself using denture adhesive every day, then your dentures probably need relined!
If you’re struggling to adjust to your new prosthetic or need occasional extra support, move on to step two.
Step 2: Choose Your Adhesive
There are three main types of denture adhesive: creams, powders, and strips. Choosing the right product for you is more about how you’d prefer to apply the adhesive. Creams are ideal if you’re experiencing sores or chafing, powders are quick and efficient, and strips involve little-to-no mess.
Step 3: Follow the Product Instructions
Each product type is used a little differently, so it’s important to review the product instructions. Generally speaking, though, creams are applied in small doses to avoid overflow, powders are sprinkled on the denture’s underside, and strips must be carefully pressed into place.
Step 4: Enjoy
Once the adhesive is on your denture, insert it and gently bite down for a few seconds. This will help the adhesive bond to your gums. Test the hold a few times if you’d like, then clean up your countertop and enjoy the improved stability!
Step 5: Remove the Adhesive
You’re not quite done yet, though. At the end of the day, it’s time to remove your dentures and the adhesive. After taking your dentures out, swish warm water around your mouth to loosen the product. Then simply brush your gums, moving in gentle, circular motions as you go. The same method can clean the adhesive off of your dentures; simply rinse and brush them until no adhesive residue remains.
Voila – that’s how you use denture adhesive in five simple steps! If you ever need product recommendations or more advice on properly using your adhesive, don’t hesitate to talk to your dentist.
